Prepare, Raise, and ScaleSupporting Founders Beyond Fundraising

Read as

Building a company requires more than securing investment. Founders must prepare their businesses, identify suitable sources of capital when needed, and turn available resources into sustainable progress. These activities are closely connected and become more important as a business develops.

Prepare: Build a strong foundation

Preparation begins with understanding the customer, validating the problem, and developing a clear business model. Founders should know how the company creates value, who it serves, how it earns revenue, and what resources it needs to operate. Preparation also includes organizing financial information, evaluating competitors, identifying risks, and establishing realistic priorities. A clear understanding of the business makes it easier to communicate with customers, potential partners, and investors.

Raise: Find capital that fits the business

When external funding is appropriate, founders need to identify how much capital is required and what it will support. The funding request should connect to business activities and milestones rather than being based only on an ambitious growth target. Different sources of capital have different requirements and implications. Founders should consider the company's stage, financial position, funding needs, and willingness to accept ownership dilution or repayment obligations. Investor selection matters because the right fit can make discussions more relevant and productive.

Scale: Turn resources into results

Securing capital does not automatically create a successful business. The company must use its resources effectively. This may involve improving the product, strengthening the team, reaching customers, developing partnerships, improving operations, or entering new markets. Growth should be supported by evidence. Founders should monitor relevant business metrics, understand the cost of expansion, and ensure that operations can support increased demand. Expanding too quickly without a reliable operating model can create problems that additional funding alone cannot solve.

Connect the three stages

Preparation supports better funding decisions, and funding can support the activities required for growth. At the same time, the experience of operating and scaling the company may reveal new information that changes the business plan. Not every company needs outside investment at every stage. Some may be able to grow through revenue, while others may need external capital to pursue a particular opportunity. The appropriate path depends on the company's goals and circumstances.
